Sajana Sanjeevan : An inspiration for millions
29 years old Sajana Sajeevan final ball six that resulted a victory for Mumbai Indians. It’s was cricketing moment that turns a player into HERO. Now she is compared with Kieron Pollard a renowned West Indies all-rounder for his explosive batting and powerful sixes is a significant compliment from her teammate Yastika Bhatia but behind all these glories there is journey from Wayand, Kerala to Mumbai Indians is truly inspiring. Her story shows the power of passion, patience and sports that how it can bring joy and pride to family, team or communities. Her journey from the paddy field to grand stage of the WPL serves a hope and inspiration for aspiring athletes especially those who are facing challenges in pursuing their dreams.
Born to an auto-rickshaw driver father,the poor family was sidelined from the community. Her income was not really that big enough that fund her sporting activities and travelling for the tournaments. But she was always passionate about cricket and used to play the game at paddy field with coconut petiole and plastic ball with her friends and relatives in which only she used to be a girl among all of them. However a talent like her wasn’t one to hide she won the 2015 and 2017 KCA Women’s Cricketer of the year. She was the one who made Kerala All India Champions in 2018 for the first time in history. In the subsequent decade, Sajana’s profile as as all rounder , a hard hitting batter and off-spinner got some more value addition as she got selected for India A . She became a state regular performer instead of this when it comes to WPL 2023 she was left unsold. But Sajana’s perseverance was rewarded late last year when Mumbai Indians picked her from the auction for 15 lakh, a jump of 5 lakh from her base price. Afterall, fighting lost battles is her hobby.She plans to clear the debt of her family. All these things highlights that her cricketing journey is all about her talent and hardwork.
Alongside her cricketing journey , she passed a degree in political science which is showcasing a balance between academics and sports.
Sajana is the only second player after Minnu Mani from Kurichiya a tribal community in Kerala. Now she is so excited to be in Indian Team and play for the country, as she said “She wants to wear an Indian jersey soon like Minnu Mani. Hopefully her dreams come true.
