The History of Domestic Cricket Tournaments in India You Should Know

                            Domestic  Cricket Tournament

1. RANJI TROPHY

India's premier domestic cricket competition, the Ranji Trophy, was established in 1934.The idea came from A.S. De Mello, the founder of the Indian Board of Control.

Ranjit Sinhji, the first Indian cricket player to play internationally, was the inspiration behind the tournament's renaming from its original name, the Cricket Championship of India.

The competition consists of a round robin phase and then knockout stages. The 38 teams who compete in the Ranji Trophy Cricket are split into two divisions: the Plate League and the Elite League. At the conclusion of each season, clubs are promoted and relegated.

Mumbai is the most successful Ranji Trophy team, having won 42 titles overall. The Mumbai Cricket team is also the current winner.

DULEEP TROPHY

The Duleep Trophy is named after former cricketer Duleep Sinhji, and the first edition took place during the 1961-1962 season. Mumbai claimed 15 tiles in a row.

The BCCI sought to make the first class competition more competitive, thus they divided states into geographical zones such as the East Zone, West Zone, South Zone, North Zone, and Central Zone.
The format was originally knockout, but after the 1993-1994 season, it was changed to a league structure.
Thereafter, only three teams—India Red, India Blue, and India Green—will compete in the event instead of on a zonal basis. A new North East zone joined the previous five zonal teams when the zonal-based teams were revived in 2022–2023 after they had ceased operations in the 2016–2020 season.
West Zone has won 19 titles, making them the most successful team in the Duleep Trophy; North Zone has won 18 titles, placing them second.

IRANI CUP

In 1959–60, the Irani Cup was established as a way to commemorate the ranji trophy's silver jubilee. Between the reigning Ranji Trophy Champion and the Rest of India, there is only one first-class match for this trophy. Zal Irani was a legendary figure in Indian cricket history and an essential component of the BCCI from the start. Therefore, by naming the cup after the legend, the board honored him.

With 31 titles, the Rest of India has, as one might expect, been the most successful team in Irani Cup history.

DEODHAR TROPHY

The Deodhar Trophy can be defined as the Duleep Trophy's list A variant. The Deodhar Trophy bears D.B. Deodhar's name, the grand old man of Indian cricket.

India A, India B, and India C compete in the tournament using a round-robin knockout format. The teams are split according to geographic zones, much like in the Duleep Trophy. When it comes to championships gained during the Deodhar Trophy, the north zone is the greatest team with 13 titles.

VIJAY HAZARE TROPHY

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is the largest 50-over domestic event in India, involving all 38 Ranji Trophy teams. The BCCI named the trophy in honor of Vijay Hazare, one of the best cricket players India has ever produced, for the 2002–2003 season.

The champion will be determined by playoffs following the round robin group stages. In contrast to the Ranji Trophy circuit, there is intense competition in the Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament.
Even though Tamilnadu has won the most titles (5 Titles) teams like Mumbai, Karnataka, Gujrat, Saurashtra, and other regions are also strong candidates for the championship, making this event one of the most thrilling domestic tours.

SYED MUSHTAQ ALI TROPHY

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was introduced in the 2006–07 season and was named after the former Test cricket player, Syed Mushtaq Ali.

The Indian public, who was just entering the T2O era, responded to the trophy with great excitement and curiosity. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is India's largest domestic T20 Championship in terms of the number of teams competing. This competition was also attended by all 38 teams competing for the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy. Unpredictability is a primary characteristic of the T20 format. For states in India with little history in cricket, like these, it's a fantastic platform. Having won the title 3 times, Tamil Nadu has been the most successful team.
